The filmmakers tracked Mir Hussain, a young Afghan, for 20 years. This unique personal story also captures historical milestones in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021.

About the Film

In 2001, as the world reeled from the shock of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Mir Hussain, aged 7, and his family were living in a cave in central Afghanistan. He slowly learned to read and write, and also to operate a video camera, which at once fascinated him. Using this family’s story, the film shows the development of one of the world’s poorest countries. Archive TV footage links the daily life of ordinary Afghans with events such as the arrival of international armies and the downfall of the Taliban government. Mir’s life takes on a new direction when he becomes a cameraman in Kabul and personally encounters the historical changes. The story ends with the return of the Taliban and the country’s yet again uncertain future.
