American filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer returns to the subject of genocide in Indonesia, where in the 1960s the regime massacred more than one million people. While his previous film The Act of Killing looked at events through the eyes of murderers, his new documentary confronts them with those who survived the atrocities. In an atmosphere where a number of the perpetrators are still involved in the administration of the country, the film's main protagonist, Adi, breaks through the wall of silence and speaks with the murderers of his sibling. Chilling interviews reveal their dark impulses as well as their unwillingness to face their actions. The premiere of the film in Indonesia sparked a heated debate about the need for reconciliation.
